Music Review #6 — “Whiskey Sour” by Kane Brown
A major step in the right direction for Kane Brown
I’ll be the first to admit; I am not usually the biggest Kane Brown fan. He has a fantastic voice, and loads of talent, I just find his main sound to be very chart-chasing, and generally lacking much soul when it comes to production and lyrics. There have been major exceptions to this however; “Whiskey Sour” is definitely one of them.
This song starts out with a strikingly rich fiddle riff, accompanied by a couple acoustic guitars. To my surprise, and delight, the song stays this stripped back the whole way through. This production allows Brown’s deep, warm voice to really break out and shine. Especially when the bridge comes in and he gets a bit louder.
Lyrically this isn’t the most innovative or anything, but it definitely is quite a step up from his typical songs. This one feels much more personal, and detailed with it’s descriptions of certain scenes and feelings. The lyrics and the general rhyme scheme feel like they could still fit into a more typical, poppier Kane Brown song, but I’m glad they didn’t go there.
This still isn’t my favorite overall Kane Brown song, but it’s definitely my favorite instrumentally. I would love to see Kane Brown just release a full-on country album with fiddles and steel, and minimal pop production. It would be very interesting to see what he could do with it.
I believe his potential is sky-high, he just has to find the production to push him there.
As for this specific song, as I said, I like a couple of his others better, like; “For My Daughter.” I love the production, and I don’t totally dislike the lyrics.
Overall I’d probably give it a 6/10.
Thanks for reading! I’d like to say here, I will probably be discontinuing the “review Tuesdays.” I’ve come to find that I just don’t really enjoy doing reviews on a weekly schedule. I’ll definitely keep doing reviews, but I’ll probably just hold them off until something big comes out, or I find something old I want to review.
There’s just not a lot of major releases happening right now in country, and frankly; I’m not good at writing reviews when I don’t really care about what I’m reviewing (hence why this one was so short). They also just don’t do that well statistically either.
So, I probably won’t be doing one of these next week, but here’s last weeks (which I am much more proud of)!
